TYPES OF FARM ANIMALS
1. RUMINANT ANIMALS
- Ruminant animals are hoofed animals that have four chambered stomach such as cattle, sheep and goats. - Ruminant animals have four chambered stomach which are the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum. - They have bacteria in the rumen which gives them ability to breakdown cellulose in the food. - They are mainly grass eater. -They have the ability to chew the cud or regurgitate.
1.1. THE IMPORTANCE OF RUMINANT ANIMALS
• Cattle provide us with beef. • Provide job opportunities. • Wool can be obtained from sheep. • Help farmers to generate income and foreign currency through export.
2. NON-RUMINANT ANIMALS
- Non-ruminant animals that have a single chambered stomach ,like those of humans such as donkeys, pigs, rabbits, human and horses. - Non-ruminant animals cannot regurgitate or re-chewing nor chew cud. - They have no bacteria and no rumen. - Non-ruminant cannot break down cellulose.
2.1. IMPORTANCE OF NON-RUMINANT ANIMALS
• These domestic animals is mainly used for transport, such as carry heavy loads. • Used as draught power to plough and carts. • For sport competition like horses
